For the movie project, I want to explore the topic "photography as a medium". Photography, in the early time, was appreciated only for its scientific aspect, such as its lenses, physical operation of the camera, and electronic camera internals. However, as it developed, the artistic aspect of photography has been recognized by the public. Meanwhile, the application of photography was no longer limited to some professionals or experts. More and more people are capable of taking pictures by their own cameras and cell phones. Thus, photography has also become a medium of communication, especially during the boom in social media nowadays. Either on Facebook or on Instagram, there are millions of posting photographs every day and people use those pictures to express their feelings and emotions as well as to arise some social awareness. Photography, no longer just a product of film technology, has already become one of the most popular media in people's daily life. In the movie, I want to interview a closed friend, who is studying at University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. He is a professional photographer and has already published a lot of work in his website. As a professional, he spends a thousands of money on buying new cameras and camera lens each year and he is very enthusiastic about his work. Furthermore, I think one of the sources I will reference on is a book called "photography as activism: Images of Social Change". This book contains a comprehensive theory and history of photography as activism. It also includes interviews with contemporary photographers. With this reference, I want to show how photography has been used as an important tool to reveal some social problems.
