First of all, before reading this article, I actually had no idea who is Cesar Chavez and what is United Farm Workers(UFW). Thus, this article provides me with an exploration of the great person and the organization founded by him. I am impressed by Chavez’s efforts for improving the civil rights for workers and farmers. Besides that, I haven’t watched any movie of Star Wars series, either. To be honest, at first, I felt a little detached from the content of the article. However, even though I am not familiar with the two subjects which the article is based on and mainly analyzes, the condition faced by the migrant labors in Silicon valley really intrigues me and concerns me. While the whole society is now advocating the improvement of civil rights and social equality, migrant workers in many parts of the United States are still facing some problems which may violate some basic human rights. Because of the mass quantity of them, they may be treated as cheap labor and usually work overtime. A lot of the migrant workers are still facing the problem of low-wages and heavy workload. However, nowadays media representations of those workers can be misleading sometimes, that is, to sugarcoat the conditions faced by them. As the Marez states in his article” the image of the little girl of color in the bunny suit is part of a corporate memory-making machine that disappears the work-related illness and injuries of low-wage Asian and Latin American migrant workers in Silicon Valley”, the portray of many migrant workers seems to become a misrepresentation of the real life. In this sense, I think the analysis of the representation of migrant workers in Lucas’s Star Wars is a good starting point in the article.
However, I think throughout the whole analysis, the author tries to make a lot of points that could be too much for readers to clear up. Sometimes I feel that there are too many points included in one paragraph or one page and that is a bit distractive. For example, there are around two pages about Lucas’s early film THX1138 and the author spends nearly one page to explain the outline of the film. When I read this part, I feel that I was reading another article about reviews and critiques of George Lucas’s early films. Even though it is kind of related to the main broad topic of the article, the connection between the two is not very strong.
